How long should an
Instagram reel be?

What one reel that worked is actually made of

Advice about reel length usually stops at “keep it short”, which is true and tells you nothing about where to cut. So we took a reel that performed well, ran shot boundary detection over it and estimated the tempo from its audio. It came to 32 shots in 14.26 seconds, an average of 0.45 seconds each, in four clearly separate movements.

Why it is shaped like that

• Opening burst. Eleven images land before anyone decides to scroll. None is on screen long enough to read properly, which is the point: it registers as motion and energy.
• Settled body. One shot per beat. Long enough to see a face and a place, short enough that nothing drags.
• The hold. Roughly two beats on the best shot. The only moment the reel stops moving, and the one people remember.
• Fast tail. Half a beat each. Ends on acceleration rather than a fade, which is what makes a loop feel deliberate.

The tempo is doing most of the work

The audio came out at 79.8 beats per minute, which puts a beat every 0.752 seconds. Line that up against the measurements and the structure stops looking arbitrary: the fourteen middle shots are one beat each, the closing six are half a beat, and the hold is a little under two. Nothing in the middle of that reel is cut anywhere except on a beat.

This is the single most copyable thing on this page. Pick your track first, work out its beat, and make every cut land on a multiple of it. An edit that does this looks directed even when the footage is ordinary. An edit that ignores it looks like a slideshow even when the footage is beautiful.

How to use this on your own footage

1. Choose the track before you cut. Its tempo decides every shot length that follows.
2. Open with your strongest few frames, very fast. Under a fifth of a second each. They are not there to be read.
3. Settle into one beat per shot. This is the body of the reel and where most of the running time goes.
4. Hold once, on the best shot you have. Around two beats. One hold, not three.
5. Finish faster than you settled. Half-beat cuts to the end.
6. Count your distinct locations. Nine or fewer and a 30-shot reel will repeat visibly. Shoot more, or cut shorter.

What we found that contradicts the usual advice

Two things. The first is that a reel does not get better by being uniformly fast: the reel we measured spends most of its length at a comfortable one shot per beat, and the speed is concentrated at the two ends. The second is that a longer reel from thin footage is worse than a short one. Eleven source clips cannot fill 32 shots without showing the same place three times, and that repetition reads as a mistake however well each cut is placed.

Where this came from

Shot boundaries were detected with ffmpeg scene detection at a threshold of 0.3, and the tempo estimated by autocorrelation over the audio onset envelope, on 13 September 2026. The figures describe one reel, not every reel. They are published because a specific measurement is more useful than another article telling you to keep it short.
